Where does the time go? School starts in a week...nad next week has to be the busiest of all summer. Special lecture class for school Monday, Debby Reed Maddy classes Tuesday and Wednesday, Professional development on Thursday....friend coming into town ( looking forward to that), and somewhere in there I'm supposed to finish basic paperwork for school, finish putting my classroom together, get binding on a birthday quilt, and do lesson plans......ie.. just another week in my fast paced life... I really need to look into the whole cloning thing...I could use a few of me hanging around. I think the Egyptians had that going for them with the shabati statues that come to life and work for you when you need something done. ;0)

In any event, I have managed to finish the Quattro bag as promised with three days to spare before Amanda's birthday. I hope she likes it. The porta pockets should fit in the Quattro bag.

Hard to believe it has been a year since my last post....wow. Guess it was a really busy year. Irene really needs to keep me on my blogging toes. So at the reteat I was on last weekend at the Sacred Heart Retreat Center in Torch, Ohio (highly recomend), Irene and I were busy working on The Quattro bag and Porta Pockets by Studio Kats Design. I must admit to some cussing and fussing ( most of them my issue is miss reading or not going back and re reading.....( could suggest some clarifying details) but all said and done the pockets came out really cute and the purse was very nice too. I've attached thepocket photos and will up load the purse pics (as soon as it is done)... It's for a freind whose birthday is comming up so needs to get done quickly. Here is to a much more productive year!!

Inner Artist Project

The August Inner Artist Project is done and quilted...the theme was "Flight" and my interpretaion was dragonflies....in moonlight..Thus the title "Dragonflies in Moonlight"...Angelina fused to fabric and fused to the background...added yarn for the moon glow in the water and yarn in the grass of the forground..

Back From China

Wow what a trip. Nine cities and 21 days in China. Quite the experience. 7000 years of history and inovation....hard to imagine. I'm going to take you through the trip a little at a time...wouldn't want to freak out those who know me ;0). We spent the first day traveling to China from Chicago. It took about 15 hours. I got some cool shots going across the Bearing Strait. There was a 12 hour time diference from Ohio to Hong Kong. Must say I was quite impressed with the international flight. Movies were in play the whole trip and food and drink was pleantiful...The first few days were spent in Hong Kong independent district. I had already gotten money through AAA so I got to play banker for the first day. The days were foggy and humid. The clouds often floating at the tops of the tall skyscrappers. This first picture, the glass one is on the back of some of the money in Hong Kong..It is by architect I.M. Pei. He is the one who designed the pyramid at the Louvre' and the Rock and Roll
Hall of Fame pyramid in Cleveland. The is one of the financial buildings in downtown Hong Kong. The other is the city tourist logo with the city skyline and dragon at the end. Passed it in the airport on the way in.

Inner Artist Project

So our guild Inner Artist Project was to take our exchange fabric from Christmas and create a wall hanging with it. I took the three; asian, green and purple and added the black. All said and done not too bad. Gave it to the guild to sell in their boutique at the guild show in May.

So I finally got a change to play with my fabric paints. I found 3 FQ of this pastel pink, yellow and green that I'm not sure how it got into the stash...Proceeded to wet it down and paint it up. The darker blue is Zim blue/ Jacquard Periwinkle/ metalic bronze; the lighter blue is Zim light blue/ pearl violet and metalic bronze; green is Zim Green/ Jacquard yellow/ met russet.

Well here we are, just put the finishing touches on this. May need to finish some more...we'll see. The theme of the challenge was "puzzle" I figured the convergence quilt was a good puzzle. Things blending and mingling. Reminicent of family and people converging and blending in puzzle like formation. The cranes flying overhead seperate yet in still in the picture. The flowers add a soft touch to the picture..kinda like how nature softens the edges of our structured lives by reminding us of the beauty that's out there. Enjoy.

I am so excited. I just won the 3 Creative Studios Block of the month prize package. It's the bomb!! It includes a package of Misty Fuse, Art + QUilt by Lyric Kinard, package of hand dyed by Vicki Walsh, art print and hand knit clutch by Terri Stegmiller, fray check and a spool of wonderfil thread.....I'm just tickled....it's better than getting a bunch of birthday squishies in the mail. Now I'm so jazzed I'll have to get the next block done at retreat this weekend...woooohooo. Everyone should come join the fun. See appropriate links on this page. On another note we have off school today because of another 7 inches of snow. I warned people that February would kick our collective butt and it is surly doing a good job of it. Will post snow dying photos after I do lesson plans for school....(thank God for the extra snow day so I can formally put those plans to paper );0)

Learned this cool new technique and I think with some more time and tweekage this could really be cool. Great for Chirstmas maybe. Right now I've got snow all ready to go in totes for snow dying..more on that in the next few days.

Ok so before I broke my foot I managed to get the arcs done for my Inner Light quilt....and there is a picture of what the top will look like kinda sorta eventually. So there are eight sets altogether. Not too bad. Could have used a little more transition from yellow to orange...Maybe I can get the rest done at retreat next weekend.

Ok so I've got this air cast on my foot now..been close to three weeks and I'm ready to stop feeling like i'm 15..hate the inability of just getting in the car a going somewhere...have to plan rides....sucks. On top of that I haven't been quilting like I'm used to..arrgh. But alas in the last few days I've managed to get a few things accomplished. The one of the left (red)is a sneek peek of the the 3 Creative Studios Challenge due Feb 28...the one on the right (purple) is block 5 of the 3 Creative Studios clock of the month...

Went over to a friends house to be silly and play Redneck life...ended up married to Billy Bob Gunch along the way...had 8 kids (3 of which were named Darryl) and broke my foot. Now not to be sued for false information, the game didn't break my foot. I did that all on my own..... Did you ever come off a step and come down wrong?? Yeah me too...last time I just tore a ligament..this time broke the right metatarsal on the right foot sprained the left while hopping around trying not to drop the stuff I was carrying...then of course came tumbling down into the middle of the street...oh yippy me..... so after spending several hours in the hospital they sent me home with a half casty-splinty thing and told me to stay off it till I see the specialist next week.....Oh joy..... Once I get my car back (couldn't frive home) I'll post pictures from the inner light project I was working on and We'll see where I go from there. Peace

The word of the year is "Focus"

So my Quiltart word for the year is "Focus". It is really something I need to work on. I have a lot going on this year and the only way it will get done is if I get to focus. So the goal here is to create a 15X15 wall hanging with this word as its "focus"...humm So my brain was thinking about it and I started to sketch a bit and thought I would post this as the process goes along. Yep, the silly little reindeer are done. Now you'd think that a wall hanging that is only 28 X 38 wouldn't take so long to do, right??? Nope. Well ya have the whole need to trace 90 pieces and add fusible etc... then fuse to fabric etc about 8 hours.. Was going to sew it on the domestic, but appearently my timing is off ( no pun intended)... So I had to put sides on it and put it on the mid arm. Once on the middy I spent about 10 hours quilting it...then I had to finish the minor touches and binding etc....really didn't think it would take so long. In any event it really turned out great and dad just loved it. Every one should have a wonderful New Year...laugh and love

What will the New Year Bring?

Well, what will the new year bring? I'm actually looking forward to this next year. There's lots of new opportunities on the horizon. I officially start my new guild position as Vice President and Programs Director in January. The current VP has the callendar set for 2010. Now I have the pleasure of finding great talent to visit and share with the guild for 2011 and 2012. Big shoes to fill but looking forward to the challenge. I've gotten all sorts of ideas from people on Quiltarts Digest and I'm looking forward into researching them and getting my own calandar together.
Speaking of challenges. I have joined Sue's group at 3 Creative Studios in starting the Quilt Challenge for 2010. It's just the push I need to keep me posting to this blog in a timely fashion so Irene and others will be kept updated ;0). That and I'll actually put myself on my schedule and set time aside for me to take care of me. Sometimes just too much is going on and I need to make time for me. I am learning to get over the guilty feelings of doing stuff for me instead of the dishes or vaccuming...after all if I'm cooking why shouldn't DH do a little cleaning??
And then there is the chance that I might get to go to China next summer. I'm almost afraid of jinxing it. I was accepted into the NCTA progam at Miami University last spring. It is a seminar on getting Asian studies into the classroom. So I've been extemely tied up in getting that going and integrating it into the classroom. Well participants are eligible to apply to go on a teachers education trip to China for three weeks next summer. I'm going to apply. I think I have a decent shot at it so will keep my fingers crossed and get my paperwork done here in the next week. I think it will be a great opportunity to learn more about China and give me even more ways of teaching my students.
I don't usually make New Years resoutions, would hate the guilt associated with not doing them. So I'm going to take a page from my own playbook with my kids and create a goal sheet for myself.
My Goals for 2010
1. I will be true to myself and my family.
2. I will put myself at the top of my list of things to do.
3. I will visit my friends more.
4. I'll laugh more.
5. I'm going to get those juices flowing and get creative.
6. I'm going to stop sweating the small stuff...after all its all small stuff.
7. I'm going to get organized and remove the clutter (I know, I know....who am I and what did
I do with Lesa)
8. I'm going to do (finish) the Chistmas projects before Easter so I won't need to stress November and December.
9. I'm going to challenge myself to read 30 minutes a day, exercise 30 minutes a day and quilt
30 minutes a day. And sleep at least 6 hours a day. (In no particular order ;0))
10. I'm going to be the best I can be without guilt or remorse......... I can only do what I can do.

1st off, the Southwest Sunset took second place in it's category in the guild challenge. Yeah!!!

Another week down and more photos..woohoo. So last Friday one of my school kids asked if I'd make a flag for them for the pep assembly, football and basketball games....So I told them if they designed it up I'd get it done...So they gave me the plan on Monday (my 13th anniversary) and it needed finished today so that it is ready for the assembly tomorrow....And voila' it is done.

Now tomorrow I have to prep for the Miami Universery conference on Asian studies on Saturday. Then back to the spiders for my house and the inner light project.

Hey lookie here...another post and it's only been a week. Woo hoo me. So busy week really felt beat down at work but made up for it with quilting. Made for of these halloween spiders. Really cute pattern thinking of applying it to several other ideas. Jon and I are going out here in a little bit. Celebrating our 13 Anniversary on Monday. My but time flies. Guild Challenge show is Tuesday..we'll see how my quilt holds up to the competition. Peace.

Hey, look at me..two posts in two weeks.....what's up with that?? Here are pics of the Maimi Valley Quilters' Guild challenge. They gave us a picture taken in nature and we had to take colors from it for the quilt. Hope you like it.

I added yarn on the green points, free motioned in gold thread overtop of it. It is a pinapple star block, then I designed the corners and mid line so that I didn't have any Y seems to deal with..that was kinda nice. Added rhinestones on the dividing line of the purples and on yellow diamonds and in the center on the design. So there is a little bling too. So tell me what'ca think.

Well it was a good year at the fair. Entered 4 won 5....good odds hey? Firestar won 1st in Minatures, What Goes Around Comes Around won 3rd in wall hanging (but got Most Intricate Piecework at NQA in the challenge category), Leaves Come a Tumbbling Down got 2nd in King size, anf the professional bag got 1st in Needlework other, and Best Of Show in Needlework total.

Yeah team. Now lets see if this lets me post pictures too today....

Hey it worked...how cool. Well can't stay long. I've gotta get grades done and posted for mid terms. Have lesson plans to get finished and printed ..then there are bills that need paid.....really need a twin of me to do all the stuff I hate to do so that I can quilt. On that end, I have "Turtle Top #3 done and quilted it yesterday. Now I just need to get the turtles on it and to the group who wants to auction it off this month. I also have the guild challenge quilt top done and need to get it quilted so it can be turned in next week. Then I need to start thinking about Rich's celtic quilt for CHristma. Irene and I picked up some kick butt fabric in Knoxville for it..just need to design it and figure out what to do with it.

Three posts in one day....I'm insane. Well almost...talk to me after retreat next month. Not sure where the time goes but I've still gotta get stuff together for the retreat demos I'm doing next month with angelina and paint sticks....now I'm thinking I might try to do some tyvek too.....I need days that are 36 hours long but only feel like 12, with no homework to grade or lesson plans to make so I can come home and play ;0) Who doesn't right?

These are pics of a blue block swap some friend of mine and I did. Kris came up with the idea to look at value and see what we came up with(could only use blues) Then lotto the whole lot off with one lotto ticket for each block entered. I didn't win but hey had the chance to play and get away from the ho hum was good. The quilt should turn out pretty good when Bonnie gets done with it.

I said I'd try to post more and here are two in one day. WOW. We had the day off of school since we got 2" of sleety stuff with freezing rain on top last night and about 7" of snow on top of that today. Here are some thing from last fall which should have gotten posted, but didn't. This was my sister's birthday present. She likes the Laurel Burch cats so she got a bag for hauling all her school stuff and change purse for lunch money.

Well, IT is finally done!!

"IT" being the Indian Orange Peel started (God help me) last year. Now admitedly I was not working on it all year. Seemed like I kept finding other things to work on. In part, I think, because I found it a little daunting. In large part because I hate to screw things up and there was a lot of time and work in the pieces... did you notice that there are rings of color around each center?? The picture doesn't do it justice..and then to get those pieces to fit..hummm. I must admit to being very disapointed in the instructions for the project. It is a Karen Stone project. And she is a very talented quilter...but dang. The instructions for this whole quilt where contained on two sides of one piece of paper!!. She had more info on the paper piecing then on putting the border together, which for me was the crux of the project. Here you have all these oddly shapped arcs and curves and she give absolutly NO suggestions for getting those to go together. Or suggestions like baste before sewing and make sure all the alignement is correct. Or how to line things up so they go where they are supposed to...... But even though It was not done by New Years eve like I wanted...all said and done I am fairly please. It's not perfect, but then neither am I so I guess that's cool. I like the colors. I like that it came from the stash....I am now facing the daunting thought of quilting the thing......Aye Vay. All those seams are going to make things interesting. Now that is a whole 'nother thing.....

I'm going to work on posting more often this year. Hey, it's a goal. Don't laugh. But if you do want to laugh, check out the comedy of Jeff Dunham. He is a HOOT!!! Just thinking about Achmed makes me laugh. Piece.

More Cancer Quilts

Well been busy the last two weeks working on the gardern, cancer quilts and getting ready for vacation. The red and black quilt picture just doesn't do it justice. There is more of an optical illusion quality to it. Went to a Vikki Pignatelli class last week that was really informative. Need to put some of it into practice. Also been busy getting ready for the Miami Valley Retreat in February. Think we have it ready to go . It's going to be a "Quilters Rendezvous"

Well entered Fantasy Fireworks in my local guild show (still don't know what the results of that were) and NQA in Columbus this year. It was close I guess. It was held for consideration in the judges best use of color ribbon. Guess that should make me happy since it's the first "big" show I've entered. Will have to see if Indian Orange Peel gets done for next year. I'm a bit behind on my yearly "big" projects. Found pic of another cancer quilt I did this spring (it's the pink/purple one)

Collage Mania II

Well I finished my entry for Collage Mania II for the Fiber for a Cause group. Check the link out. I think it turned out pretty cool looking. Previews start the end of April and selling starts early May. Early previews are $80 and sale day is $40. Seems like a great deal for some great art. Many well-established artists are in the show. I think I'll probably bid on a few myself.

While stuck in a snow storm

Well, last weekend was something else. Ohio got dumpped on with over 12 inches of snow in about 36 hours. Well that didn't bother me. I was at a retreat, sewing machines were humming, food was plentiful, laughter was heard often ...we were just having a good time. Decided to start the weekend off with a day of quilting for others. Lady in out guild is sending baby dolls and mini quilts to match to a church in Latin America . I think they turned out cute. dress, slip, diapper, and quilt to match.

Since the pictures were taken, I've added faces and hair will come latter. The bag pictures was made for my secret sis at retreat. I think it turned out pretty good and here my husband thought it was too much. My sis really liked it.

I also got all the arcs done for my Indian Orange Peel quilt and have started on the boarder pieces. Yeah.

I got the next rounf robing finished and sent off. Grethcen says she really likes it. I used paint sticks for the leave stencil and gold, bronze and other metalics on top of the leaves to have it blend with some other metalics that were already there.

Ok my fabric has finally come home. You'll remember that 5 robiners sent out 1 yard a fabric that we had done something to. The other 4 ladies got a hold of it and did wonders. You can see my sea grass still there, but now we have Mermaids, turtles, bubles, froth and wavys. Really cool. My kids at school say I need to add a treasure chest....we'll see. Then I think I'm going to put it on a shower curtain in my bathroom.

Been busy. FINALLY got Sarah's quilt done. The timeing on the machine got screwed up with 1/2 the binding done so When I took the machine into the shop, I begged to use a machine to finish it up. So there I sat for an hour finishing it up. One more thing off the list. Now maybe I cna take those online class lessons I've been missing. ;-)

Getting excited

Well In honor of Irene having to work last Friday while I did not, I started a new UFO in her honor (snicker). In any event I went to the stash and decided to work on Indian Orange Peel by Karen Stone. Really cool pattern (see picture). So spent the day sorting fabric, picking pairs, cutting strips..ya know all the boring stuff. Then I got to play. Decided to do the corners of the quilt. And I really like how they came out. Though the one with green will need to be changed for continuity, the colors themselves are fine, but I think with the other 3 corners being with blacks and browns in the spikes that I probably should change it. What do you think?

Off to clean off "the table" so I can make sheers for the front window..DH says it's casting a glare on his new toy...61"flat screen DLP TV.....hummm our men are spoiled.

All I wanted for Christmas were some DVDs and peace on Earth...well and fabric....instead I get MRSA. A lovely staph infection that is resitant to the normal drugs and makes you look like the elephant man. My whole lower left face was a mess from cheek bone to below jaw line. Very not cool. Made me miss New Years party we'd planned for all year. Jon had even gotten a tailored suit. The drugs seem to be working, but they make me tired. Irene had to do to school today so told her I'd start a new quilt in her honor. So got out my Indian Orange Peel pattern and hit the stash and the pallette is in place and will get to cutting fabric after a small nap ;0). Pictures are of snow freezing and sliding off roof.

Weekend at Irene's

Well after Christmas I went up to Irene's for a long weekend of sewing. Irene kicks but in her ability to get quilts done. Starting on Thursday afternoon with a stack of flannel that I'd collected for several years, I ended up Sunday afternoon with an 88x88 flannel quilt done my way....bright and crazy!! Top left is front, left is Sable not wanting to left out and thouroughly enjoying mom's new quilt (you know the dog has to approve all quilted items), bottom left is the back all of it was done rag style.

Well I've been really busy lately. Got the garge cleaned out so I could in good conscience play with my new mid arm quilting machine. I also got into a round robin for a surface design group that has been interesting and I will post those pictures too.

This was my yard of fabric and the design I painted on. Kinda thought I saw turtles swiming in the grass.
This was the next person's I got. I added the paint stick flowers
This was Suzan's. She had used orange on white dye and then the next person did it up in salmon color dye and I added the geometric paint stick design.

This is the ne Pfaff mid arm Grand Quilter. I could wish for a londer neck space yet when I think of the killed price I got plus 1500 off for their mix up I really can't complain for what I want to do with it. Still have some thread issues to deal with, but nothing we won't get a handle on eventually. Irene's quilt is on the frame in this picture.

Hello to all,
School starts tomorrow with two days of teacher stuff then we're off to the races. So I managed to get the sample done for a paper piecing class I'm teaching in West Virginia in December. It is based on Karen Stone's New York beauties and I modified her boarder for this small one. It's 24 X24 . Came out pretty good. Hello,
this is all new to me but so far so good. I seem to have managed to get things in order I guess. I have posted pictures of some of my more crative quilts. But of course, I went through my pictures backwards so the Harry Potter quilt is the oldest, dating to 2000. and go forward from there. The Third Week in October was finished in March, and the Fourth of July finished up in June 2007. Well it's getting kinda early so I should go to bed so I can get up this morning and get to work....told you I'm not in my right mind;0) I'll have to change my time schedule once school starts in the fall.
